My wife and I are white. We adopted our wonderful African American children at birth. We strive daily to help our son grow up to be a confident, proud and loving black man and our daughter to be a confident, proud and loving black woman. I hope our experiences will help others who are doing the same.

Jacob's elementary school hosts living Black History Museum in celebration of Black History Month

Jacob's 5th and 6th grade elementary school hosted a living African American History Museum for the first time yesterday in celebration of Black History Month.  It was fantastic with some children dressing like their great African American historical figures, some with Powerpoint slide shows and others with elaborate posters.

The sixth graders were spread out in the gym and cafeteria.  They held pretend buttons that the fifth graders, teachers and parents pressed.  Once pressed the sixth grader would provide a five minute presentation on their subject.  It was quite a sight looking across the gym seeing so many sixth graders simultaneously making the presentations to the mostly attentive fifth graders.

Jacob choose to do his presentation on Dr. Benjamin Carson.  His Uncle Jim who recently and unexpectedly passed away had given Jacob a copy of Dr. Carson's memoir, Gifted Hands.  Uncle Jim met Dr. Carson at an inspirational talk the he did at Uncle Jim's church in Pennsylvania.  Uncle Jim was a firm believer in Dr. Carson's philosophy - THINK BIG is Dr. Ben Carson’s philosophy which promotes outstanding academic achievement and dedication to helping others.  Please visit Dr. Ben Carson's Carson Scholars Fund to see how Dr. Carson puts his philosophy to work for our young people.

In undergoing his research for this project, Jacob watched Gifted Hands:  The Ben Carson Story with his sister, Antonia and I.   Cuba Goodings, Jr. did a wonderful job portraying Ben Carson.  The three of us were riveted to the screen as we watched the movie.

Here are copies of the posters that Jacob made with glogster.com to support his museum exhibit.  The posters can also be viewed in their entirety on BlackChildrenWhiteParents Facebook page or at Early Years or Later Years.

Josh White Jr. playing a free concert this Sunday at East Lansing Public Library

Jake and I have seen Josh White Jr. perform and have thoroughly enjoyed him.  He will be playing this Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 at the East Lansing Public Library.

I need to remind myself to celebrate my children's German American Heritage too

Something that I need to remind myself - not to focus on only the African American cultural aspects of our children.  Both of our children have German American heritage  on their birthmother's side as do we so -

Last year I brought rib tips to the my son's school cultural taste night.  This year I'm choosing between bavarian saukraut and pork loin or Gaisburger Marsch.  Do you have a preference?

My daughter's school increases its celebration of Black History Month

Last year I was responsible for posting a bulletin board at Marble Elementary School to celebrate Black History. The Board was a celebration of diversity rather than black history based on direction I received. This year, I was surprised to see a large display board dedicated to black history. It had dated graphics with the usual historical figures, but throughout the month, additional graphics were added for lesser known historical figures. Antonia donated a photo of Barack, Michelle, Malia and Sasha Obama. Also, Marble's Principal shared historical tidbits daily on the school's address system. Way to go Marble Elementary!

Last week I read Barack Obama's Letters to My Daughters to my daughter's class.  I have learned not to wait for my children's classes to step up to celebrating black history but instead to bring it to the class.

I love this song - always appropriate

Halle Berry on her daughter's race in The Marquee Blog

From The Marquee Blog  - The Oscar winner, whose mother is white and father is black, tells Ebony that she identifies herself as a black woman but plans to let 2 1/2-year-old Nahla — whose dad is white and French Canadian — make her own decision about her race when she's old enough.

"I'm not going to put a label on it," she says. "I had to decide for myself, and that's what she's going to have to decide — how she identifies herself in the world. And I think, largely, that will be based on how the world identifies her. That's how I identified myself."

of color, a great deal of the money is being returned because of a lack
of interest.

Help to get the word out that money is available. Our youth really could
use these scholarships. If clicking on the link doesn't work try

Research findings concerning racial discrimination against black students in Michigan

Under Cover Brother as a cultural awareness tool

Jacob and I love the movie Undercover Brother. We find it to be hilarious and educational, especially for a white dad helping his black son to develop his cultural identity. A couple of nights ago, Jake had a couple of friends who happen to be African American over for a sleepover. I asked them if there was anything they didn't want on there subs and together they both said, "mayonnaise." Jacob and I looked at each other and smiled.

Ernest Pugh brings joy and praise to East Lansing and to my family

Antonia, Jacob and recently attended an Earnest Pugh benefit concert for the Lansing Food Basket. When when in to the auditorium Jake said, "there is only on one person here." Surprisingly he wasn't referring to me. We had a wonderful time singing praise. He is an incredibly gifted singer. The black mimes in white face were cool too.
